Detention ponds are an extremely common aspect of development. A way of collecting fast-moving stormwater and slowly releasing it, detention ponds are a simple idea in theory but in execution; they’re much more complex. There are regulations that govern how they are supposed to operate and be managed, and many ponds are not built properly or to the specifications called for in their plans. New MS4 regulations will have counties inspecting detention ponds to verify compliance and with these new regulations and inspections, many ponds will be found to be deficient. At this point, the counties will be sending letters to pond owners, such as HOAs and companies and requiring the ponds to be brought into compliance.
